Church History

Grace Episcopal Church was founded in 1859 in Galesburg, IL. At its founding, the church was part of the Diocese of Illinois, which was then split into three dioceses by act of General Convention in 1877, into the present Diocese of Quincy.

The historic Grace Episcopal Church underwent something of a transformation in the mid-2000s. At the time, parochial reports document membership hovering around 250. As Diocesan leaders formulated strategy to remove the diocese from the Episcopal Church, a new rector at Grace told Episcopal Church loyalists they were no longer welcome and essentially removed them from Episcopal Church property. Between 2004 and 2006, membership in Grace Church dropped to less than 150 as those in possession of the Episcopal Church property renamed and re-branded themselves into an orthodox Anglo-Catholic church, changing affiliation into another denomination.

Refusing to be removed from the Episcopal Church without their consent, members of the continuing Grace Episcopal Church regrouped and now meet at Central Congregational Church in Galesburg while awaiting the outcome of legal proceedings over the rightful ownership of church property.
